Who is in charge - you or your
pet?
Before you take
any photos of your pet for a painting, if you have any animal books
have a look at the photos in them. Choose a picture that you
especially admire then look at the way the animal is standing and how
the photo has been taken. Then try to picture your pet in a
similar stance.
Remember most photos are taken candidly so take a few photos and
select the ones that look the best. Have fun and have patience.
Take your time for it is only then you will achieve pleasing results.
Some
simple yet effective suggestions are as follows which provide
excellent photos for both people and pets.
LIGHTING:
-
the best
possible lighting is achieved on a bright overcast day outside in natural light.
This would also apply to a picture taken in the shade. This retains
the muted effect of natural colour.
-
direct sunlight
can alter natural colouring with shadows causing unnecessary
effects.
SIMILAR LEVEL: Top

-
make
your pet relaxed and comfortable then take a photo at their level.
This is
important for full body shots. Either sit or lay down then
take the
photo. Then when your pet looks at you, you will see their
natural lines instead of when they look up, their face or body could
be distorted.
-
if you want a portrait of just the face of your pet, take a photo
where the face and upper body fill the frame
HAPPY AND FRIENDLY:
-
make your pet
interested by holding up a favourite toy or plaything near the
camera. You know how to get their attention.
-
if they have a
favourite sitting position and it is one you associate with your
pet, then take that photo. Your pet will also be in a
comfortable position.

The quality of
your pets portrait will depend on the photos you have taken. The
portrait will remain with you for many years so take the time to take
the best possible photo. It may be candid or posed but if you are
happy with it,
Dorothy will
ensure that she adds her touch of magic to make the portrait special.
